Student Engagement

The Student Engagement team is committed to supporting students from enrolment to graduation, ensuring they remain engaged and motivated. We take both a caring and operational approach, offering practical academic support while addressing personal challenges that may impact learning.

What Student Engagement Can Support You With:

Your Academic Adviser should be your first port of call for practical academic guidance, however Student Engagement can support you to have these conversations if you are struggling. The Study Skills Moodle page has resources, video guides and bookable workshops on skills such as referencing, critical thinking & writing, editing, proofreading, researching, notetaking and much more!  You can also get support from Royal Literary Fellows for writing style and attend study skills sessions to build confidence in areas like referencing, time management, and critical thinking.

An attendance concern means your attendance has dropped, which may indicate you’re facing difficulties or disengaging from your studies. This can affect your academic progress and may lead to deregistration from modules if not addressed. Support is available, please speak with your Academic Adviser or book an appointment with a Student Engagement Adviser via the Student Support Portal.

Deregistration from modules means you have officially been removed from a module and will no longer be able to attend or be assessed for it. This can affect your progression, funding, or visa status, so it’s important to get advice first. You may be able to pick up an alternative module. Please speak with your Academic Adviser, Programme Administration team, and an International Adviser (if applicable) for guidance and support.

Intermission means taking an approved break from your studies, usually due to health, personal, or other significant reasons. Before intermitting, speak with your Academic Adviser and a Student Engagement Adviser to explore your options. Support is also available when you return to study, such as meetings with your Academic Advisor and members of the Student Support Team.

Fitness to Study procedures ensure students are well enough to take part in university life, academically, socially, and personally. If your health or behaviour is affecting your studies or others, the university will offer support, not punishment, to help you stay safe and succeed. Please refer to Fitness to Study Policy for more information.

Withdrawal is formally leaving the university, which can affect your academic record, funding, and visa status. There are other options such as course transfer and intermission. Before making this decision, speak with your Academic Adviser, Student Engagement Adviser and International Adviser (if applicable).  You may also wish to check the Withdrawal Checklist to understand the steps and financial implications. Book appointments with Student Support via the Student Support Portal.
